However, today I decided I was going to go skate. But to do so, I needed a nut for the kingpin on my truck. I have been in the process of selling off excess boards and had to steal from my own setup to make another complete in order to sell it. So I went to the local shop and got what I needed (he gave it to me for free).
As I drove home, I thought about how small and seemingly insignificant the piece of hardware I had just obtained was. But it made it possible for me to do something that I love. This turned my thoughts to a movie I recently saw entitled "The Martian. Quick synopsis, an astronaut gets stranded on Mars, uses his brilliance to survive for a year an a half and is rescued. At the end of the movie, he is an instructor for prospective astronauts. He talks about his experience and says that the secret to his survival was that is spite of the overwhelming odds, he would find a single problem and solve it. After solving a lot of single problems, he made it back home.
Sometimes, we don't want to do anything. Whether its caused by depression, stress or just having a rough day, it happens. In those times, its helpful to find your "piece of hardware" or your "one problem" and start with that. Don't worry about the next one. Just work on one. Yes, it is easier said than done and no it is not a fool proof method. But the mark of success is honest and full effort. I am sure this concept is old news to all of you high functioning superstars, but to me, it made a difference.
Keep trying. Don't give up. Life is hard, but that is okay. Never hesitate to contact me if you need help. That is why I do this. Just to help.
